09/09/05: "blood... blood..."

No, I've not been watching seedy films involving vampires, zombies and possibly retired Spice Girls, nor have I been trying to intimidate a computer (for explanation read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) but I donated blood today. Or, more correctly, I made a pathetic aborted attempt to donate blood today. Let me elucidate.
... Well, there's not actually enough to tell for a full-on elucidation. That was just me being dramatic. Basically, I sat on the couch thing, got what looked like a roofing downpipe stuffed into a vein in my arm and 196ml of claret later, started waving at my friendly medic (with the other arm) asking almost apologetically "um, is it normal to feel like you're going to throw up and/or faint?". "No... no it isn't" he retorted, looking at me as if I'd just pulled a cat sandwich out of my rucksack and offered him some. Needless to say, he disconnected me from the vampir-o-matic and made me have a nice lie down and some orange cordial.
Still, I was keen to do it and the poor first experience hasn't put me off. After a bit of Q&A, my medic saviour left me with the wry comment: "you know that question on the questionnaire that says 'are you feeling well and healthy today'? That really doesn't mean 'are you feeling well and healthy today apart from jetlag and a cold'".
Nuff said.
